How to Choose the Right Paper for Every Print Project
Paper is half the print. The same design on flimsy copy stock versus heavyweight cotton feels like two different brands — and your customers notice before they read a word. After twenty years of estimating jobs, here is the simple framework our team uses to match stock to project.
Start with weight, not looks
Paper weight (measured in points or pounds) decides how a piece feels in the hand. Business cards live at 16pt and above — anything lighter feels disposable. Flyers work at 100–130lb cover when they need to survive a bag, while letterheads stay light at 70lb text so they fold and file cleanly. When in doubt, go one step heavier than you think; the cost difference is small and the perceived quality jump is large.
Coating controls the mood
Gloss coatings make photography pop — ideal for food, fashion, and product-heavy brochures. Matte and silk coatings mute glare and feel editorial, which suits law firms, studios, and wellness brands. Uncoated stocks absorb ink for a soft, tactile finish that takes foil stamping and letterpress beautifully. One rule: never judge coating on screen. Ask your printer for a swatch book and feel it under real light.
“Clients always ask for the thickest stock. What they actually want is stiffness — and a 16pt card with the right coating feels more premium than a floppy 24pt one.”
Match texture to brand
- Smooth silk: the safe default for corporate print — clean, modern, fingerprint-resistant.
- Linen and felt: subtle texture that reads traditional and trustworthy — favorites for invitations and certificates.
- Kraft and recycled: visible fibers that signal sustainability — perfect for packaging, hang tags, and eco brands.
- Cotton: the luxury option — archival, pillowy, and unmistakable for wedding suites and executive stationery.
Ask for samples before you commit
Every reputable printer mails free stock samples — we send them daily. Hold the shortlisted stocks, bend them, write on them, spill coffee near them. The right paper survives your real world, not just the proof. And when you are ready, send the file: our preflight check confirms your stock choice works with your ink coverage before anything goes to press.
